Japanese shipping companies are working with shipbuilders to develop self-piloting cargo ships.
The “smart ships” will use artificial intelligence to plot the safest, shortest, most fuel-efficient routes, and could be in service by 2025. The artificial intelligence will also will also predict the malfunctions. So there’s isn’t a huge crew required to handle ships anymore.
There will be 250 numbers of navigating ships very soon the company says.
The first pairs of ships will retain few crews in order to test it on how things will go, but later on this will become completely automated.
Rolls-Royce is also planning on remote controlled vessels which will start its operation in the year 2010.
